Keynote Three: Hilarious Teens with Superpowers

1/19/2019

I’ve been listening to Renegades by Marissa Meyer on audiobook these past two weeks, and have loved every second of it. Since I only have a few chapters left, I thought it would be a perfect time to compile a list of other books showcasing superpowers. I’ve included three distinct types of stories, so there is a book for everyone involved. Be sure to let me know what your favorite book with a superpower is at the end of the post!

The Lightning Thief
by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse - Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of
Athena - Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

I read these books all the way back in the sixth grade, and I BINGED THEM. You couldn’t pry this series out of my hands if you offered me twenty chocolate cakes.* These books have so many layers in the stories with a massive cast of characters, so much mythology easter eggs, and not to mention the sassiest main character of all time. Percy is, to this day, one of the funniest narrators of all time. When I read these books back as a smol child, there were just the original five. Now that there are so many spinoff series, it’s on my list to reread in the future!

*This might be an exaggeration. I will do anything for that amount of cake. And there is more than one copy of this book that exists…

Rebel Belle
by Rachel Hawkins

Picture
Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.
Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated
when Harper starts falling for him—and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.
With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y'all beg for more.

DO NOT BE DETERRED BY THE COVER. I REPEAT. THIS BOOK IS NOT ITS COVER. On the outside, Rebel Belle looks like a sweet contemporary story about a southern belle. But, in actuality, this book is about a girl who gains the butt-kicking superpowers of a Paladin, who are an ancient line of guardians sworn to protect the Oracle, David Stark, who she just so happens to despise. This book is filled to the brim with funny banter and snappy dialogue, and is perfect for readers who like fantasy elements, but would prefer to see them in a contemporary setting.

Nimona
by Noelle Stevenson

Picture
Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord
Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Are you more of a graphic novel person or would you like to get into the genre? This book is the one for you. This book is a perfect story to binge in one sitting, and, I promise, you will love every minute of it. It’s a quirky book set in a medieval/technological/magical world, and it meshes together perfectly. The characters, though, are what make this book out of this world. Their conversations and relationships had me laughing out loud throughout the entire story.

Do you like reading stories where characters have fantastical powers? Which book is your favorite? Let me know in the comments so we can discuss!
