Precommendations: Volume 3, Issue 3

3/2/2019

Happy March! March is one of the best months of the year; spring is just around the corner, high school musicals are up and running, and it’s my birth month! With all of these beautiful things on their way, I can’t wait to share some great new releases, too. I can’t promise too much reading this month, because this first half of the month is absolute craziness with my schedule, but I am looking forward to reading these books sometime soon. Be sure to let me know what books you’re reading this month in the comments.

Field Notes on Love
by Jennifer E. Smith

Picture
Having just been dumped by his girlfriend, British-born Hugo is still determined to take his last-hurrah-before-college train trip across the United States. One snag: the companion ticket is already booked under the name of his ex, Margaret Campbell. Nontransferable, no exceptions.
Enter the new Margaret C. (Mae for short), an aspiring filmmaker with big dreams. After finding Hugo's spare ticket offer online, she's convinced it's the perfect opportunity to expand her horizons.
When the two meet, the attraction is undeniable, and both find more than they bargained for. As Mae pushes Hugo
to explore his dreams for his future, he'll encourage her to channel a new, vulnerable side of her art. But when life off the train threatens the bubble they've created for themselves, will they manage to keep their love on track?

Jennifer E. Smith has been my romance queen ever since I first read YA, and I’m so excited she’s coming out with a new book! Her stories are always cute and upbeat; they’re perfect for breaking a reading slump or enjoying a book by the pool. I am especially excited about this one because it features an adventure-y travel story! I feel like every time I go on a trip, I always imagine falling in love with a cute boy in a beautiful city. PLUS, you would probably never guess this, but I LOVE train travel. A lot. Train trips always seem magical and full of possibility, so I am ready to read this book ASAP.

Girl, Stop Apologizing: A Shame-Free Plan for Embracing and Achieving Your Goals
by Rachel Hollis

Picture
Rachel Hollis has seen it too often: women not living into their full potential. They feel a tugging on their hearts for something more, but they’re afraid of embarrassment, of falling short of perfection, of not being enough.
In Girl, Stop Apologizing, #1 New York Times bestselling author and founder of a multimillion-dollar media company, Rachel Hollis sounds a wake-up call. She knows that many women have been taught to define themselves in light of other people—whether as wife, mother, daughter, or employee—instead of learning how to own who they are and what they want. With a challenge to women everywhere to s
top talking themselves out of their dreams, Hollis identifies the excuses to let go of, the behaviors to adopt, and the skills to acquire on the path to growth, confidence, and believing in yourself.

I recently listened to Rachel’s first book, Girl, Wash Your Face, on audiobook, and loved it! She is down-to-earth, and her advice is always simple and easy to apply to your own life. I didn’t realize she was releasing a new book until now, and I’m so excited to see what this book brings. I’m a firm believer that women should be more self-confident, and I can’t wait to see what advice Rachel has for all of us strong women out there to be more confident.

The Mermaid's Voice Returns in This One
by Amanda Lovelace

Picture
Goodreads Choice Award-winning poet and USA TODAY bestselling author Amanda Lovelace presents the mermaid’s voice returns in this one — the third and final installment in her “women are some kind of magic” series, featuring a foreword from Lang Leav and 13 guest poems from leading voices in poetry such as Nikita Gill, KY Robinson, and Orion Carloto.
The mermaid is known for her siren song, luring bedroom-eyed sailors to their demise. However, beneath these misguided myths are tales of escapism and healing, which Lovelace weaves throughout this empowering collection of
poetry, taking you on a journey from the sea to the stars. They tried to silence her once and for all, but the mermaid’s voice returns in this one.

OMG Amanda Lovelace is my FAVORITE POET, and I am counting down the days until this book comes out. Her first book, the princess saves herself in this one, might just be my favorite book of all time. That book and all its powerful words came into my life when I needed them most, so Amanda will always have a special place in my heart. If you are a fan of strong and independent women, her poetry is right up your alley!

Sherwood
by Meagan Spooner

Picture
       Robin of Locksley is dead.
Maid Marian doesn’t know how she’ll go on, but the people of Locksley town, persecuted by the Sheriff of Nottingham, need a protector. And the dreadful Guy of Gisborne, the Sheriff’s right hand, wishes to step into Robin’s shoes as Lord of Locksley and Marian’s fiancé.
Who is there to stop them?
Marian never meant to tread in Robin’s footsteps—never intended to stand as a beacon of hope to those awaiting his triumphant return. But with a sweep of his green cloak and the flash of her sword, Marian makes the choice to become her own hero: Robin Hood.

Another fairy tale retelling from Meagan Spooner is coming out this month, so how can I not be excited? I first fell in love with her work after reading the These Broken Stars trilogy she co-wrote with Amie Kaufman, and I recently read her solo book, Hunted, and I was blown away. Her writing style is out of this world, and she has a knack for spinning these classic tales on their head. I’m only somewhat familiar with Robin Hood, but I’m still excited to see her twist with a female protagonist. There’s no doubt in my mind; it will be fantastic.

And that’s the list! Be sure to tell me which books you’re looking forward to this month in the comments so we can discuss!

Until next week,
Ashton
