A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.
A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (65%) was just plain okay for me. There were some good parts to this book, but nothing spectacular.
Now, for those of you who watch BookTube, we all know how much JesseTheReader loves this book. I definitely respect his love for the novel, but I just can't relate to his feelings. For me, it definitely doesn't need the hype it gets. I also understand that Jesse might relate to this book a lot more than me, which makes a ton of sense.
One of the main reasons that I was turned away from liking this book was the background set-up and the length of time that was spent world-building. Both took FOREVER!

This is exactly how I felt when I looked down and realized I was about 150 pages in and Jacob still wasn't at the home yet.
I also don't feel like there was a lot of character development. Jacob did have to grow up and leave his time behind, but other than that, almost everyone else stayed relatively the same.
Overall, I think it was neat that Ransom Riggs could find a story in some pictures, but really that's all.

We cling to our fairy tales until the price for believing in them becomes too high.”
